I recently got turned on to the the Funk Bass Bible, a book published by Hal Leonard. The first thing I noticed was it had a rich selection of songs, included some early R&B, funk and even 90’s gangsta rap songs. I am a 90’s guy, as I learned how to play in my early teens in the 90’s. My bass playing heroes where Flea of “The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Les Claypool of “Primus” and Matt Freeman of “Rancid.”

There was always a certain funk to all of Fleas bass playing. I love his style and this book has helped me learn from Fleas influences, and there are also 2 Flea (Chili Peppers) songs included. One of which is “Higher Ground,” this was the first song I ever slapped the bass on as a kid. I could never understand why RHCP always wanted to work with George Clinton. Now I understand thanks to this book.

You need to be proficient in the Slap and Pop bass techniques to work out of this book. I do not recommend it for a beginner player. Intermediate to Advanced players will LOVE working from this book. Also if you are already schooled in FUNK music you may find this book redundant, and I would not recommend it in that case.

The book includes this songs in full recorded arrangements with both tab and musical notation.Funk bass Bible song list
